Top Ten Books That Helped me Overcome Addiction

I’ve read a lot of self-help books. In desperation to understand my addictions and figure out how to stop I searched for the perfect book that would fix everything for me. I thought I could find the book that would tell me the secret and everything would quickly be all better. Well, though I did gain much essential knowledge, it turns out there was no secret but only knowledge I had forgotten or had never learned. I am very glad I did read all those books. On the journey to recovery I felt like I was devinely led to certain books written by inspired authors. Here is a list of the 10 best books I read.

1. “Book of Mormon” – Without exception, this book gave me more hope and strength and understanding than any other book. You certainly don’t have to be Mormon to read the Book of Mormon.

2. ” The Drug of the New Millennium–The Brain Science Behind Internet Pornography Use” – The Science of How Internet Pornography Radically Alters the Human Brain and Body. Author: Mark B. Kastleman. Best book I’ve read explaining every detail of how pornography addiction is created in a person.

3. “Pleasure Unwoven” – Written by Kevin McCauley, its actually a DVD rather than a book. It is the absolute best argument on addiction I’ve ever seen. You will gain a greater understanding of how you become addicted by watching this than most other sources. View it here.

4. “The Power of Positive Thinking” – By Norman Vincent Peale. It showed me there really was power in positive thinking. I gained a great faith and understanding of my personal powers through the principles in this book.

5. “The Truth Behind the Fantasy of Porn” – This is written by former porn star Shelley Lubben. This book really helped me see porn in a totally different way that made it a lot less exciting. I will give you a heads up if you decide to read the book, the last several chapters speak of her religious beliefs that myself and many may not completely agree with. That’s ok I just focused on what did help me and that was the majority of the first chapters of the book. UPDATE: She no longer offers the book for free however you can learn a lot about the truth of porn on her blog here.

6. “Unlimited Power” – By Anthony Robbins. The main thing I took away from this book was specific techniques used to change my thoughts and emotions. If this is a skill you are lacking then this may be the book for you.

7. “Lessons in Mastery” – Also by Anthony Robbins. This concentrated more on controlling emotions and attitude but it was similar to the principles taught in “Unlimited Power”. I would recommend this one on CD

8. Toolstolife.com – Developed by Devlyn Steele. This is not a book but it contains enough content to be a book. This is a day by day program to set goals and overcome bad habits. I would highly recommend it to anyone with any bad habit.

9. “He Did Deliver Me From Bondage” – By Colleen Harrison. This is a book modeled after the original 12 step program but with Book of Mormon principles.

10. “Conquering Your Own Goliaths” – By Steven A. Cramer. Teaches how to conquer the goliath of addiction just as David conquered Goliath in Biblical times. Great Book!!

  6. I few minutes ago I prayed to my Heavenly Father. I asked him to help me to stop looking at porn. I’m not addicted. I do this probably a few times a year. But today I realized how powerful and destructive pornography can be and that’s why I asked for help. I typed on google “how to stop -etc” and found your site. I read a lot of it. And then I checked your top ten list of favourite books and I realized that one of your books is “The Book of Mormon”. I don’t know if you are mormon or not, but I am. I have a pretty comfortable live, with beautiful kids and an amazing live. And yet, I look at porn sometimes. But then I found your voice on the net, telling me that hope and happiness is still possible. That the book of Mormon is still a great tool to overcome my fears, my temptations. That I’m not alone and that many people have gone through this and overcome these temptations. I can do it. I really know I can. I’m being pretty honest with myself right now and I’m telling you (whoever wrote this articles) that I will do it. You know what, for a few minutes your voice was not only yours but that of my Saviour trying to help me understand that He answers to my prayers. That He listened to me and that He’s here to help me. For a few minutes, you were an angel.
    Thank you.

I too believe in God and I pray everyday to quit looking at these disgusting works of man that supposedly bring pleasure but really honestly just bring sorrow in the end. I read what one visitor of this site said and it brought a tear to my eye. Thanks, al, for touching me with your story.

  9. who wrote those articles???I really respect you whoever you are,I am an Egyptian guy Muslim I am 19 years old and I am facing the same kind of addiction that you have been talking about, but you gave me hope that I am not the only one, that’s why I will try harder because like you said before there are some days that I feel happy and others I feel really depressed,I will try to read those 10 books that you have mentioned above,I came across this article by chance I was doing a persuasive presentation and topic I chose was “the need to censor internet pornography”so I was searching for some information that’s when I saw this beautiful article of your,GOD Bless you wish you a wonderful life GOD WILL

  10. The Most important help is to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
Through Christ you can do all things. Nothing is to big for God. He can
absolutely brake the bondage, but you must renew your mind. By reading
    the word of God.

I had an addiction to marijuana and I didnot want to quit. God said ask me to take the desire away. I prayed that and then I started to read the word of God everyday.

What you give your attention to, is what you will desire. So you have to guard
your mind, by what you say, what you hear, and what you listen too. You
can be set free but to stay free you can not go near anything that will put
you back to be tempted.. You have to make a decision past what you feel
to what is best to be alive and have a long strong healthy life. Asking for
God to come into your heart by accepting Jesus as Lord is the only real
    help to staying free.

  11. I almost couldn’t believe when I saw that the first book you listed was The Book of Mormon. I am LDS myself and have read it twice and I think I’m about to start a third time. I have an addiction to masturbation and pornography and once was able to over-come it. But I was only able to do it through intense scriptual study and self-reflection. Another book that I would recommend was written by one of the leaders of the LDS Church, Spencer W. Kimball. It’s called The Miracle of Forgiveness. It’s tough to read for people who are addicted but the end gives hope and really helps out.

It’s true, Jesus Christ is the only way to recover from it. He has suffered every pain we will ever experience from physical pain, emotional pain, and spiritual pain. He’s the only One who can truly empathize. It’s hard to address Him as a sinner, just like it’s hard to be told that you’re a sinner, but if we are humble then like The Book of Mormon promises us, “…then will I make weak things become strong unto them.” (Ether 12:27)

    • Just to thank all who provide help and advice to those who are addicted or being released from addiction. Speaking as the wife of a sex addict Is it common for you men who are addicted to Porn. to find it difficult to also keep your eyes and desires in check just when in the street, work, park or wherever young women are around ? and is it common to emit uncontrolled sexual grunts and other sexual noises towards women, even when you’re accompanied by your wife/girlfriend. I have refused to go out anywhere with my husband because I find his behaviour so embarrassing as well as extremely hurtful, I can see how marriages/relationships have an almost impossible challenge to survive and why so many are destroyed by this corruption of the one flesh relationship God calls us to.

  12. Hello, my name is Jason and I volunteer for SA Lifeline Foundation, a not for profit company located in Lehi, UT. You can find us online at salifeline.org. We work everyday to spread the word about Pornography / Sexual Addiction. We have found great success and joy in helping others overcome their addiction. In the process of setting up the foundation we became acquainted with Donald L. Hilton Jr., MD. Don is a top neurosurgeon from San Antonio, Texas. He has written a book entitled “He Restoreth my Soul”. It is an amazing book that details the problem, and provides hope for recovery. The angle Don takes is unique because of his medical background. To date we have sold 17,000 books most of which have gone to Bishops, Stake Presidents, and ARP Missionaries. The book is currently available at all LDS retailers.

The reason I am contacting you, is because we need your help. We are currently reaching out to blogs and websites like yours asking that you provide some kind of information to your readers about the book, and / or our foundation. If it would help I can put you in touch with our founders Steven and Rhyll Croshaw. They can explain more about their efforts, and the efforts of the foundation. Steven and Rhyll were recently featured on the “Out in the light” documentary that was shown immediately following the last conference session. Please let me know if you have any interest in helping us continue to reach out to those that struggle with Pornography / Sexual addiction.

  13. Anthony Robbins is really good teacher and motivator when dealing with the problems that you face, learing how to adjust your thinking, the associations that cause us to do what we do (good or bad), etc..

I enjoy his books because it is on the level of easy reading and understanding, simple, and at you as if you were conversing with a friend. God Bless us all and my we all find the success of beating this addiction for life.
